I heart graphic designers.
First things, first... let's consider the people behind "design." Graphic designers are not simply technical experts that know how to use InDesign. While they are technically trained in design software, they are also artists who can translate your brand essence into a visual and visceral message. It’s powerful. And, it can often be critical for projects to succeed. I truly adore collaborating with Graphic Designers and watching what I may put in rational words be transformed into something visually beautiful and impactful.
But, not every communication effort justifies hiring a graphic designer.
So, what can you do to give your social media some professional sparkle, or make your next flyer stand out? While there are plenty of ways to “fake it” with Word and other standard computer software, there are now also online design tools that allow you to not only create something that looks great on your screen, but is optimized for its end-use, whether that be print or digital.
I’m talking specifically about Canva. Canva has become a daily resource for me, both as a marketing professional and as a DIY marketer.
So, I also heart Canva.
Why is it so great?
Templates for Everything: Well, maybe not everything, but everything I’ve needed so far. Facebook cover photos, event photos, blog posts, Instagram, flyers, posters, menus, brochures…
Modern and Varied Design: With each template, there are pre-populated designs. They’re modern and varied enough that I can always find a good starting point and edit from there to make it my own.
Intuitive & Easy to Customize: If you’ve been making flyers in Word, then this will be a breeze. You can edit everything in the selected design (colors, shapes fonts and add/remove/change elements). They even offer a library of photos and graphics to use. Many of those elements are free, and if not free, they’re typically $1.
Downloads are Optimized: When you’re done and ready to download the file, Canva will default to the recommended file type for the template that you selected. You can also pick other formats and chose crop marks for professional printing.
Fast & Free: And, beyond the significant quality upgrade from my old DIY tricks, it’s FREE and makes the project move FAST. There are additional services and upgrades available, but the free service does an outstanding job for most small business needs.
So, Canva is my in-house designer. And I’m happy to share her with y’all.
